How Dreams And Memory May Be Related

چکیده
I present a theory of dreams and long term memory structure that proposes that both entities are closely related. It is based on a variation of Freud's dream theory: (1) I re-label Freud's "Unconscious" the “Long Term Memory Structure” (LTMS), (2) I propose that dreams are ever present excitational responses to perturbations of perceptions and thought, during waking life as well as sleep, which only become conscious when the executive function of waking life ceases, and (3) I reinterpret Freud’s “Dream Work” as describing the pre-dream Storage Transformation of perceptions and thought into the LTMS. I make one further conjecture: Memories are stored in the LTMS according to what is already in the LTMS. The observables of Freud's theory remain the same. The new theory is also consistent with recent experimental findings and suggests a partial basis for personality: the selection process of the Storage Transformation. “... each of us remembers and forgets in a pattern whose labyrinthing windings are an identification mark no less distinctive than a fingerprint” (American Pastoral, Philip Roth)

O14: Autobiographical Memory, Trauma, and the Development of Memory Interventions
Autobiographical memory, that is, our memory for personal life experiences, is integral to our sense of self. However, the experience of trauma can create distortions in how our memories are bought to mind. In particular, trauma can produce an overgeneral memory style, which relates to the development of both PTSD and depression. However, theory states that immediately following a traumatic eve...
متن کاملSuch stuff as dreams are made on? Elaborative encoding, the ancient art of memory, and the hippocampus.
This article argues that rapid eye movement (REM) dreaming is elaborative encoding for episodic memories. Elaborative encoding in REM can, at least partially, be understood through ancient art of memory (AAOM) principles: visualization, bizarre association, organization, narration, embodiment, and location. These principles render recent memories more distinctive through novel and meaningful as...
متن کاملAn Attempt at Matching Waking Events Into Dream Reports by Independent Judges
Correlations between memories and dreaming has typically been studied by linking conscious experiences and dream reports, which has illustrated that dreaming reflects waking life events, thoughts, and emotions. As some research suggests that sleep has a function of memory consolidation, and dreams reflect this, researching this relationship further may uncover more useful insights. However, mos...
متن کاملDreams and Psychedelics: Neurophenomenological Comparison and Therapeutic Implications
BACKGROUND A resurgence of neurobiological and clinical research is currently underway into the therapeutic potential of serotonergic or 'classical' psychedelics, such as the prototypical psychedelic drug lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin (4-phosphoryloxy-N,Ndimethyltryptamine), and ayahuasca - a betacarboline- and dimethyltryptamine (DMT)-containing Amazonian beverage. The aim of th...
متن کاملP16: The Effect of PTSD on Memory
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder and phobia manifest in ways that are consistent with an uncontrollable state of fear. Impaired memory for elements of the traumatic experience is a core feature of PTSD, and clinical complaints of memory impairment for non-trauma-related stimuli are common. Several studies have documented generalized memory impairment among patients with com...
